Education

Empowering education and community development

Education empowers children to grow mentally and socially. In order to encourage boys and girls to stay in school and give them the confidence and self-esteem needed to succeed, L.I.F.E. has developed three programs—a girls running club, a boys soccer team and a women’s vocational training centre. L.I.F.E. also distributes school supplies to local schools, community organisations, and those involved in our programs.

Girls in our running program, GirlsRun2, are assisted with their school fees so they can stay in school. They meet every day for practice after school and participate in city-wide and national events on the weekends.

Women’s vocational center

Our women’s vocational centre offers three levels of sewing classes, ultimately equipping women to start their own sewing businesses and acquire the skills to train others. Graduates from the program receive their own sewing machines and can start providing for their families in a flexible and rewarding job. Other programs include jewellery making using paper beads, baking classes, and seminars on various women’s issues such as FGM, health, and self-worth.

Following this success, L.I.F.E opened up similar sewing classes in Arta to offer women new skills to provide for their families.

Soccer

For the past six years, L.I.F.E. has sponsored a boys’ community soccer club. Last year, the team entered the 3rd division competition, and this year, the coaches are starting up a soccer academy. The boys get 5 trainings a week, incorporating physical and technical training alongside life skills and character building. By fostering a well-rounded development program, the academy ensures that players are equipped with the necessary tools to excel both on and off the field, creating a positive impact on their overall growth and potential future career endeavours.

Veterinary animal health project

The Animal Health Project supports herdsmen caring for goats, sheep, and camels by addressing widespread livestock illness, primarily related to tick infestation. Alongside treatment and prevention efforts, the project equips herdsmen with resources that strengthen long-term stability, including drip irrigation support and seed distribution.

To date, more than 3,000 animals have received care, improving food security and livelihoods for the communities that depend on them. As herdsman Mahad Muse shared, “They gave us what we needed. These people kept their word.”

Other Opportunities in Community Development:

  • Skills training such as baking, sewing, and English tutoring

  • Supplying sports equipment for football teams and runners in poor areas

  • Creating sports opportunities for vulnerable youth in the community (see GirlsRun2 website)
